The Art of Patience with myself, Behind the Lyrics of Jessica Lockwood’s “While I’m Still Young”
In the world of independent music, the most profound songs are often those that act as a mirror to the artist’s soul. Last year, at the MiMc Music Awards, one track stood out for its raw honesty and reflective beauty: “While I’m Still Young” by Jessica Lockwood.
“While I’m Still Young” by Jessica Lockwood.
Taking home Third Place in an incredibly competitive year, Jessica has proven that sometimes, all you need to reach an audience is a piano, a voice, and a truth that hurts just a little bit.
The Struggle of Becoming
“While I’m Still Young” explores a feeling that every creator knows well: the tension between being proud of how far you’ve come and the nagging feeling that you aren’t yet the person you want to be.
Through vulnerable verses and a chorus, the song serves as a reminder to be patient with oneself. It is an anthem for anyone learning to grow at their own pace.
Inspired by a Legend
Every great song has a lineage, and for Jessica, the inspiration came from one of the greatest storytellers in Canadian history: Joni Mitchell.
Jessica cites Mitchell’s “Both Sides Now” as a major influence, particularly its reflective and bittersweet perspective. Much like Joni, Jessica manages to capture a sense of wisdom that feels both old and new at the same time.
Written in a “Flash” of Emotion
Some songs take years to perfect, but “While I’m Still Young” was born in a rare moment of total emotional presence. Jessica wrote the entire track in under an hour.
“It was a rare moment where my emotions were so present that the song simply poured out,” Jessica shares.
The song was originally titled “Hard on Myself,” a nod to the internal pressure we put on our own growth. However, Jessica renamed it to capture the softer, more hopeful heart of the piece. This shift in perspective is what makes the song so special, it moves from self-criticism to self-compassion.
Currently, “While I’m Still Young” exists as an unreleased demo. Despite its “unfinished” status, its 3rd Place win at the MiMc Music Awards proves that the song’s emotional core is already world-class.
We have big hopes for this track as Jessica prepares to share its full story with the world.
Stay tuned, this is just the beginning for Jessica Lockwood.
