Sarah Shafey Reimagines the “Paper Bag Princess” in Hard-Hitting New Album
Award-winning Canadian-Egyptian artist and producer Sarah Shafey is set to release her fifth album, “Paper Bag Princess,” on July 18th, available on all streaming platforms. Inspired by Robert Munsch’s iconic children’s book, Shafey’s album boldly reverses the traditional “princess and dragon” narrative, merging feminist themes and personal revelation with raw 1990s grunge.

Shafey, a classically trained pianist, chose grunge as her primary mode of expression to rebel against outdated societal standards imposed on women. “My new album is a rebellion against those toxic messages that have been fed to us women our whole lives,” she states. By embracing a male-dominated genre, Shafey, much like Munsch, empowers women through her art, showcasing a woman in power.
The 9-song collection features sharp commentary and playful lyrics, balancing “bangers and ballads” with a distinctive artistic vision. Shafey plays rhythm guitar on the album, a testament to her embrace of challenges, and collaborated with co-writer Jess Boomen and co-producer Kyle Ashbourne, with a track co-produced by Grammy-nominated Michael Hanson.
“Paper Bag Princess” is a holistic artistic statement, reflecting Shafey’s diverse identity as a songwriter, producer, tech executive, and women’s empowerment advocate. The album was tracked at The Sugar Shack Recording Studios and Altravox Studios, and mastered by Kristian Montano.
This critically acclaimed artist, known for her passionate music and unique artistry, continues to evolve her sound, delivering an album that is both thought-provoking and cathartic.
