Discover the Power of Community Radio, Supported by the NCRA/ANREC

A vibrant and authentic voice often goes unheard in a world saturated with mainstream media.

But across Canada, a powerful force is shaping culture and connecting communities in a truly unique way: Community and Campus Radio.

The NCRA/ANREC (The National Campus and Community Radio Association Inc./L’Association nationale de radios étudiantes et communautaires Inc.) is at the heart of this dynamic sector. Founded on July 14, 1986, this non-profit organization has been instrumental in nurturing the growth and vibrancy of community radio in Canada.

Starting with fewer than 20 members, the NCRA/ANREC has grown to represent 126 community and campus radio stations as of March 23, 2023.

Far from the corporate airwaves, these NCRA/ANREC member stations are the heartbeats of their locales. They are built by the people, for the people, and their programming reflects the incredible diversity that makes Canada so special.

Imagine tuning into a station where you can hear shows broadcast in over 65 languages! Collectively, these stations boast an incredible 6,000+ dedicated volunteers who bring these diverse voices to life. This isn’t just radio; it’s a cultural tapestry woven by the very communities it serves.

The NCRA/ANREC has diligently worked to facilitate the continued expansion of this vital sector, encouraging stations to join their growing family of community-focused broadcasters. Their efforts ensure that these essential local voices continue to thrive and reach an ever-wider audience.

Perhaps you’ve even considered starting your own station, a platform to amplify local voices and share your unique perspective. Community radio, with the support and resources of the NCRA/ANREC, offers a powerful avenue to connect with your neighbours and contribute to the cultural landscape.
